Gain the knowledge for safer sedation and patient care.
Most people have some degree of anxiety about going to the dentist, possibly keeping them from receiving basic oral care that can prevent significant dental disease. Oral and moderate intravenous sedation can be used to reduce those fears and allow patients to receive the care they need. However, many of these people come with a list of medical conditions and medications that can make treatment more challenging.
Join Dr. Jay Reznick and DOCS Education for Evaluating Patient Risk Factors for Moderate Sedation, a new program that will provide the basics of the most clinically relevant medical disorders and medications you’ll encounter in daily practice. Moderate parenteral sedation has a wide margin of safety when used appropriately by well-trained clinicians. The ability to evaluate a patient’s health prior to initiating any type of sedation is an essential skill for all dentists.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the fundamentals of everyday cardiopulmonary disease that may present in patients who desire sedation.
- Identify the various types of medications used to treat heart disease, hypertension, and heart failure.
- Determine whether oral or moderate intravenous sedation would be most appropriate to use for each patient.
- Learn to physically evaluate each patient to establish the best approach to safe dental care.
- Correctly assign a physical status risk category in alignment with the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ classification.
- Understand how to modify the sedation treatment plan for patients in different special risk categories.
