What is the impact of recreational drugs on dentistry? Dr. Anthony Feck will review some of the most common recreational drugs and their effects in this timely webinar.

In November 2020, Oregon legalized the use of psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and micro-dosing of LSD. In November 2022, Colorado decriminalized psilocybin and legalized the licensing of “healing centers” where patients can experience the effects of psilocybin under supervision. Currently, 19 states have legalized marijuana for recreational use over the last decade. And more measures for recreational drugs are being added to ballots nationwide.

With the rapid increase of state laws allowing recreational drug use, the dental team providing safe and effective sedation must have a working knowledge of the medications and substances their patients are taking, prescribed or otherwise.

In this timely and important presentation by DOCS Education, Dr. Anthony Feck will review some of the most common recreational drugs and their impact on delivering dentistry – with or without sedation.

Topics to be Discussed:

  • The four basic categories of recreational drugs
  • What is the recreational drug with the highest degree of CNS stimulation?
  • LSD micro-dosing (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)
  • The use of Ketamine in treating psychiatric disorders
  • The two types of interactions between alcohol and sedation medications that can lead to severe consequences
  • The impact of marijuana on sedation and a protocol to overcome it
  • Fentanyl – 50 to 100 times stronger than Morphine
  • Oral and IV sedation protocols for the patient taking Fentanyl for medical reasons
  • Minimizing the impact of nicotine on the sedation appointment for both smokers and vapers
