What if the best dental implant is… another tooth?
Dental autotransplantation offers a unique opportunity to replace missing teeth with a patient’s own biological tissue—restoring not only function and esthetics but also maintaining alveolar bone and periodontal integrity. Dr. Dick Barendregt (Rotterdam, Netherlands) will present the surgical and periodontal aspects of autotransplantation, highlighting case selection, surgical protocols, and long-term outcomes. His focus will emphasize precision, biological principles, and innovations that enhance transplant success.
Complementing this perspective is Dr. John Christensen (Durham, NC), a pediatric dentist and orthodontist. He will discuss the interdisciplinary coordination required to optimize results—covering orthodontic preparation, root development considerations, and restorative strategies for functional and esthetic integration.
Presented by DOCS Education, these two renowned speakers will demonstrate how collaborative planning transforms dental autotransplantation into a predictable and regenerative treatment option for growing patients.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to identify cases for dental autotransplantation—and understand when to use this solution.
- Review step-by-step insights into the surgical and periodontal protocols that maximize transplant survival and integration.
- Identify orthodontic strategies for donor site preparation and timing.
- Discuss restorative considerations to achieve long-term function, esthetics, and harmony with the natural dentition.
- Understand the power of interdisciplinary collaboration—how surgeons, orthodontists, endodontists, and restorative dentists can create great outcomes through teamwork.
This webinar is free to attend. We offer 1.5 CE for DOCS Members and Trial Members who attend the live presentation.

Dr. Dick Barendregt finished dental school at the University of Groningen before working as a dentist in the Royal Dutch Navy and several private practices. He completed his Master of Science training at the University of Amsterdam and in 1996 founded his own clinic in Rotterdam, specializing in periodontology and implantology. For 20 years, Dr. Barendregt’s emphasis in patient treatment has been on the interdisciplinary planning with endodontists, orthodontists, restorative dentists, dental technicians, and fellow periodontists.
He received his PhD degree in 2009 and was appointed in 2019 as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Periodontology, Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Barendregt also serves as Clinical Professor at Complutense University of Madrid, is a member of the Editorial Board of Dental Traumatology and has authored or co-authored several articles and chapters on dental traumatology and autotransplantation.
Dr. John Christensen is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (DDS, 1982) and earned his specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry (MS, 1984) and Orthodontics (MS, 1986) from the University of North Carolina. As a dual-trained pediatric dentist and orthodontist based in Durham, Dr. Christensen serves on the faculty at UNC Chapel Hill, where he teaches in both the pediatric dentistry and orthodontic residency programs.
His areas of focus include early orthodontic treatment strategies, managing dental trauma and congenitally missing teeth with orthodontic solutions, and coordinating multidisciplinary care for children with complex dental conditions. Dr. Christensen also directs the UNC Dental Trauma Team, which has completed over 100 dental autotransplantation cases since 2019. In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he is a contributing author and editor of the 7th Edition of Pediatric Dentistry: Infancy Through Adolescence, a leading textbook in the field.
